The price ladder is set by the shelf, not by your cost sheet

Vancouver shelves already carry a ladder. Arriving with a number that sits between two rungs is the fastest way to be ignored.

Reading the ladder

Most categories settle into three or four price rungs. Shoppers learn them without ever naming them, and a price that falls between rungs reads as an error rather than a position.

Working it backwards

  • Find the rungs before setting the margin target
  • Decide which rung you are buying into, then build the cost sheet to fit
  • If you cannot reach a rung, change the pack size, not the price
A price is a claim about which shelf neighbours you belong with.

매대는 90cm 앞에서 읽힌다

대부분의 패키지는 책상 위 팔 길이에서 승인된다. 하지만 소비자는 1미터 밖에서 먼저 걸러낸다.

Six stores in Calgary, one recurring mistake

Every brand had priced for the coast and merchandised for a market that shops differently. The shelf told on them.
